Big Change at UNN as Mass communication unbundled, following NUC approval

By admin     3 months ago

If you are an aspiring UNN student, a current Mass Comm student, or a parent planning admissions, this is important news for you.

The National Universities Commission, NUC, has officially approved the unbundling of the Mass Communication programme at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN. This is a major shift in how communication will be studied at Nigeria’s first indigenous university.

Here is everything you need to know.

What Does Unbundling of Mass Communication Mean?

For years, Mass Communication was run as one broad degree. Students would later specialize in areas like Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Broadcasting, and others under the same B.Sc Mass Communication certificate.

Unbundling means NUC has now split that one broad course into several distinct, standalone degree programmes.

Instead of one Mass Communication department admitting everyone, UNN will now run separate departments with focused curricula for each specialization.

What New Courses Will UNN Offer After the Approval?

While UNN’s Senate will release the final list, NUC’s unbundling template for Mass Comm usually creates these five (5) separate degrees:

1. Journalism and Media Studies - News reporting, investigative journalism, and digital media

2. Public Relations - Corporate communication, reputation management, and crisis PR

3. Advertising - Brand communication, media planning, and creative strategy

4. Broadcasting - Radio, TV, film production, and broadcast journalism

5. Information and Media Studies - Media literacy, data journalism, and media research

Why NUC Approved the Unbundling

NUC says the goal is to:

1. Produce specialists, not generalists: The media industry now wants graduates who are job-ready in one niche.

2. Match global standards: Many universities abroad already run these courses separately.

3. Improve employability: A focused degree makes it easier for students to build a strong portfolio before NYSC.

4. Reduce overcrowding: Mass Communication is one of Nigeria’s most oversubscribed courses. Separate quotas will help manage admission better.

What This Means for UNN Students and Aspirants

1. For JAMB/UTME Aspirants 2026/2027: Mass Communication will no longer be a single JAMB option in UNN. You will now choose directly between Journalism, PR, Advertising, etc., when filling your form. Cut-off marks may also differ per course.

2. For Current 100L/200L Mass Comm Students: UNN’s management is expected to give a transition plan. Most schools allow current students to finish under the old curriculum, or opt into a new department. Watch out for an official Senate circular.

3. For Career Focus: If you already knew you wanted PR or Film, this is good news. You will get more practical courses, industry tools, and lecturers specialized in that field from year one.

When Will It Take Effect in UNN?

NUC approval is step one. UNN will now have to set up departmental structures, HODs, and course outlines, complete NUC’s final resource verification, and upload the new programmes to the JAMB CAPS portal.

Most universities roll out unbundled courses in the next academic session after approval. Keep an eye on UNN’s official website and JAMB brochure updates.

Bottom line

This is UNN aligning with global media education trends. If you are passionate about one area of communication, you will now get to study it deeply from year one at Nigeria’s Lion university.

What do you think about the unbundling? Would you pick Journalism, PR, Advertising, or Film if you were choosing now? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
