NECO Releases 2026 BECE Results: 186,291 Candidates Participate, Re-sit Exam Scheduled for July 22-23

The National Examinations Council, NECO, has officially released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE. The announcement was made through a press statement signed by Azeez Sani, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, following the conclusion of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting.

The Basic Education Certificate Examination is the exit exam for Junior Secondary School 3 students in Nigeria. Performance in English and Mathematics is critical for progression to senior secondary education.

KEY DETAILS FROM NECO PRESS RELEASE

1.Statistics of the Result  

A total of 186,291 candidates registered for the 2026 BECE across 12 subjects. The candidates were drawn from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, as well as 5 foreign countries. making the exam truly national and international in scope.

2. Examination Dates

The 2026 BECE commenced on 20th April 2026 and was successfully concluded on 30th April 2026. NECO confirmed that the exam was conducted smoothly across all centers.

3. Official Release & Committee Meeting

The results were released after the successful conclusion of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at NECO’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State.

During the meeting, the Chairperson of the Award Committee, Dr. (Mrs) Folake Olatunji David. Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, represented the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa. Dr. David expressed satisfaction with the processes leading to the timely release of the results.

The meeting was also attended by several secondary school principals from across the country and members of NECO Management.

2026 BECE Re-sit Examination Announced

NECO also announced dates for candidates with deficiencies in core subjects:

Re-sit Dates: 22nd and 23rd July 2026
Subjects: Mathematics and English Studies only


According to NECO, the BECE Re-sit examination is specifically for candidates who have conditional deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies, or both.

The purpose of the re-sit is to allow affected students remedy their deficiencies so they can obtain the necessary certification for admission and placement into Senior Secondary School 1 (SSS1) without losing an academic year.

This re-sit option is a major relief for students who narrowly missed the credit pass requirement in the two core subjects.

What Candidates Should Do Next

1. Check Results: Candidates can check their results through their schools or via the official NECO result portal once activated.

2. Re-sit Registration: Students with deficiencies in Maths/English should contact their schools immediately for re-sit registration details. The July 22-23 dates are fixed.

3. SSS1 Admission: Schools are expected to commence SSS1 placement for successful candidates ahead of the new academic session.
