FG to begin admission into Military College of Medicine & Health Sciences – Education Minister

By admin     2 months ago

The Federal Government has announced that it will begin admission into the new Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences. The announcement was made by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, after a high-level meeting with education and defence leaders in Abuja. This is not just another medical school. It is being set up to solve two big problems at once: Nigeria’s shortage of doctors and the need for well-trained medical personnel in the Armed Forces.

What was announced

The Federal Government is moving ahead to establish the Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The College will be located inside the existing framework of the Nigerian Defence Academy, in line with the federal government’s seven-year moratorium on new tertiary institutions.

Clinical training will happen in accredited federal and military hospitals, including the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital and the 661 Nigerian Air Force Hospital in Lagos.

According to the Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, admissions are projected to commence by October or November 2026. A Technical Working Group has already been set up with the Federal Ministry of Education, Ministry of Defence, Nigerian Defence Academy, MDCN, NUC, JAMB and other bodies to ensure compliance and accreditation.

Why the FG is doing this?

Nigeria is facing a serious shortage of medical personnel. The Minister disclosed that with a population of over 240 million, only 189 medical doctors currently serve within the Defence Forces. Nationally, the country has an estimated shortfall of about 340,000 doctors.

The College is designed to build a structured and sustainable pipeline of combat casualty-trained doctors, surgeons, trauma specialists, emergency response medics, military public health professionals, and other allied health workers.

It also aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Nigerian Educational Sector Renewed Initiative, especially the focus on strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences.

As part of broader reforms, the Federal Ministry of Education has already increased annual medical school admissions from about 5,000 to nearly 10,000, with plans to reach about 19,000 in the coming years. Military College of Medicine & Health Sciences will be a critical part of that expansion.

Who can apply and how admission will work?

Admission into the Military College of Medicine and Health Sciences will be conducted through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB. That means you will still need to write JAMB and meet the cut-off before applying.

The programme will run for eight years in total. That breaks down to six years of academic study, one year of military training, and one year of housemanship.

Upon successful completion, graduates will be commissioned as Captains in the Armed Forces. The idea is to produce doctors who have both world-class medical expertise and military discipline, leadership skills and operational readiness.

Important details to note

1. Location:‎ He disclosed that the college would be located at the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital Kaduna, leveraging existing infrastructure for immediate commencement of academic and clinical activities. The institution will be hosted within the Nigerian Defence Academy and linked to accredited federal and military hospitals for clinical training. Training centres include facilities in Lagos.

2. Courses: Beyond MBBS, the College will also train trauma specialists, emergency medics, disaster and humanitarian response professionals, and allied health personnel.

3. Goal: To enhance military medical readiness, reduce attrition, and guarantee a steady pipeline of commissioned medical officers for Nigeria’s Armed Forces.

4. Regulation: A Technical Working Group comprising education, defence and regulatory bodies is handling compliance to meet NUC, MDCN and other standards.

5. Vision: The FG says this will also position Nigeria as a regional hub for military medical training in West Africa.

What this means for you

If you are an aspiring medical student who also has interest in service, discipline and national duty, this College gives you a direct path. You get quality medical training, and at the end you serve as a commissioned officer.

Because admission will be through JAMB, start preparing now. Keep an eye on JAMB registration, cut-off marks, and when the portal for AFCOM&HS opens. The target is October/November 2026, so you still have time to get your documents and grades ready.

This move is also good news for Nigeria’s health sector. More doctors means better healthcare for both civilians and military personnel, and stronger emergency response during crises.
