4. Africa Context: Nigeria leads Africa in number of ranked universities with 24 institutions. In Sub-Saharan Africa, UI/UNILAG are tied at 10th, behind South African universities like University of Cape Town at #164 globally.

HOW THE RANKING WORKS

To be included, universities must teach undergraduates, conduct research across multiple subjects, and have published at least 1,000 research papers from 2020-2024. THE analyzed 174.9 million citations from 18.7 million research publications and 108,000 scholar surveys.

Bottom Line: The 2026 ranking shows Nigerian universities are gaining global ground, especially in research and internationalization. UI’s return to the top and UNILAG joining the global 1000 are major milestones. However, experts note that "quality must now match quantity" as Nigeria pushes for more funding, research, and industry partnerships.
